Motion-preserving Spine Surgery in Germany
helping patients from all countries
The Disc Replacement & Facet Replacement Specialists
Many spinal surgeons continue to recommend the surgical removal of damaged intervertebral discs and the fusing of adjacent vertebrae (spinal fusion). While spinal fusion has been the gold standard for many decades, the irreversible fusion procedure can lead to a permanent range-of-motion loss and an increased risk of degeneration in the neighbouring spinal joints.
If you are not happy with your current surgical recommendation for spine surgery, SkyGen can remotely co-ordinate a second opinion with our German spine centre, where over 500 patients from the USA & Canada have travelled in recent years for motion-preserving Artificial Disc Replacement (ADR) and Facet Replacement surgery. These senior neurosurgeons are experts at complicated and multi-level cases and offer the advanced solutions for patients with:
- Degenerative Disc Disease
- Disc Bulging/Herniation
- Spinal Stenosis
- Local & Referred Nerve Pain
- Facet Joint Arthritis and more...
As well as being highly experienced in ADR surgery using the latest M6 & ESP Implants to replicate full natural movement, the German Spine Specialists also perform TOPS Total Lumbar Facet Replacement surgery. This motion-preserving solution is also superior to a traditional spinal fusion and can be used in cased of spinal stenosis or spondylolisthesis where ADR is not suitable. After 15 years and thousands of implants, our spine surgeons are highly experienced in these motion-preserving surgeries, along with traditional surgeries like minimally invasive spine fusion via anterior and posterior approach. You can rest assured our German Spine Specialists will recommend the best surgery for your case according to their skill and expertise.

State-of-the-Art Artificial Disc Replacement (ADR) Technologies
The spinal surgeons at the ONZ are highly experienced Artificial Disc Replacement (ADR) surgeons implementing the most advanced disc technologies available today. These spine surgeons are experienced in performing ADRs at 1, 2, 3 and 4 levels. As an example of this experience, Dr. Bierstedt annually conducts 350-400 spinal surgeries and Dr. Illerhaus performs over 400 spine interventions annually. Both specialists offer the M6 and ESP Discs, and will discuss and provide the best implant to match each patient case. Dr. Bierstedt and Dr. Illerhaus are respected as senior surgeons who have contributed to the development of multiple motion-preserving spinal implants around the world.
M6 Artificial Disc (Cervical)
ONZ Neurosurgeon Dr. Thomas Bierstedt on the M6-C implant, “We select your implant from a wide variety of state-of-the-art implant types to customise your artificial disc replacement individually for your body and activity level. The M6 is designed to mimic a disc’s natural motion. According to my experience the M6 is best suited for herniated discs, regular lordosis, or normal anatomical physiologies. Precise diagnostics with the most careful attention to detail lead us to your perfect solution.“
ESP Artificial Disc (Cervical)
ONZ Neurosurgeon Dr. Bernd Illerhaus uses the ESP implant. The Elastic Spine Pad (ESP) disc is a new-generation implant similar to the M6. It offers healthy movement in 6 directions, including shock absorption. The CP-ESP is available in many different sizes and configurations and different anatomies require different implant solutions. Principally we target to replace the pathomorphologic disc by an artificial disc that mimics the biostatical features of a natural, healthy disc. In patients with very low discal heights we have to react with the smallest implant types available.
M6 Artificial Disc (Lumbar)
ONZ Neurosurgeon Dr. Thomas Bierstedt about the M6-L implant, “According to our experience the clinical outcome with the M6 is superior to other implant types of previous implant generations. The M6 is designed to mimic a disc’s natural motion in a superior quality. Its features like restricted flexion and extension plus shock absorption are significantly less stressful for facet joints and adjacent levels. Implant subsidence has dramatically decreased with the M6 compared to previous implant types like semi-constrained or ball-and-socket devices.
ESP Artificial Disc (Lumbar)
ONZ Neurosurgeon Dr. Bernd Illerhaus also uses the ESP Implant. Similar to the M6, the LP-ESP is a new-generation Artificial Disc. It moves in 6 directions, including compression, and demonstrates increased resistance toward the end of every motion to help protect the facet joints and make it suitable for multi-level interventions in select patients. Both Dr. Bierstedt & Dr. Illerhaus will match the most suitable implant with the patient on a case-by-case basis.
TOPS & NEXUX Total Facet Replacement
ONZ Neurosurgeons Dr. Bernd Illerhaus & Dr. Thomas Bierstedt both offer Total Lumbar Facet Replacement. As a posterior motion-preserving solution which can be offered to patients who are unsuitable for ADR and unwilling to accept a spinal fusion, the latest NEXUX model is smaller than the original TOPS System, offering a more 'compact' solution.
Most people suffering from moderate to severe lumbar spinal stenosis (with or without spondylolisthesis) are being treated today with spinal fusion. The NEXUX System is an alternative to fusion surgery for patients suffering from moderate to severe lumbar spinal stenosis and/or spondylolisthesis. It allows healthy axial rotation, lateral bending, extension, and flexion.
"A fusion is an irreversible interference of the biomechanics of the spine. Who would accept a fusion of the knee or hip joint in the case of osteoarthritis?”
Watch the German spinal surgeon Dr Thomas Bierstedt discuss motion-preserving spinal surgery
Dr. Thomas Bierstedt is a specialist in neurosurgery and an expert for the conservative and surgical treatment of degenerative and traumatic spinal disorders.
Dr. Bierstedt conducts 350–400 spinal surgeries of all degrees of difficulty. Approximately, 50 % of these surgeries motion-preserving interventions i.e. artificial disc replacement.
He is also an adviser in the development of different implants and instruments for the medical technology companies LDR, Premia Spine and Signus.
Additionally, Dr. Bierstedt educates and trains new surgeons for various surgical procedures.
