Spinal Surgery in Germany
for Australians and New Zealand Patients
World Leaders in Motion-Preserving Spine Surgery
Many spinal surgeons in Australia and New Zealand continue to recommend the surgical removal of damaged intervertebral discs and the fusing of adjacent vertebrae (spinal fusion). While spinal fusion has been the gold standard for many decades, the irreversible fusion procedure leads to a permanent range-of-motion loss and an increased risk of degeneration in the neighbouring spinal joints. Further to this, the hand-full of surgeons using Artificial Disc Replacement (ADR) implants in Australia & New Zealand are using older generations of implant which do not move in the required 6 directions or vertically shock absorb. These older implants are unsafe for multi-level use, and local patients with multi-level spine damage are having to accept a fusion at the other damaged levels.
If you are not happy with your current surgical recommendation for spine surgery locally, SkyGen can remotely co-ordinate a second opinion with our German spine centre, where over 500 patients from the USA & Canada have travelled in recent years for motion-preserving Artificial Disc Replacement (ADR) and Facet Replacement surgery. These senior neurosurgeons are experts at complicated and multi-level cases and offer the most advanced solutions for patients with:
- Degenerative Disc Disease
- Disc Bulging/Herniation
- Spinal Stenosis
- Local & Referred Nerve Pain
- Facet Joint Arthritis and more…
As well as being highly experienced in ADR surgery using the latest M6 Implant to replicate full natural movement, the German Spine Specialists also perform Total Facet Replacement surgery. This motion-preserving solution is also superior to a traditional spinal fusion. After 15 years and thousands of implants, our spine surgeons are very experienced in these motion-preserving surgeries, along with traditional surgeries like minimally invasive spine fusion via anterior or posterior approach. You can rest assured they’re equipped to recommend the best surgery for your case.

“Unlike with fusion, M6 disc replacement patients can enjoy a healthy lifestyle with little to no restriction on sports and activities.”
Artificial Disc Replacement (ADR) Options (selected by your surgeon)
The spinal surgeons at the ONZ are the most experienced Artificial Disc Replacement (ADR) surgeons implementing the most advanced disc technologies. These surgeons are experienced in performing ADRs at 1, 2, 3 and 4 levels. As an example of this experience, Dr. Bierstedt annually conducts 350-400 spinal surgeries and Dr. Illerhaus performs over 400 spine interventions annually. Both specialists have helped to consult and contribute to the development of the latest motion-preserving spinal implants available.
Implant Type: M6-Cervical
ONZ Neurosurgeon Dr. Thomas Bierstedt on the M6-C implant, “We select your implant from a wide variety of state-of-the-art implant types to customise your artificial disc replacement individually for your body and activity level. The M6 is designed to mimic a disc’s natural motion. According to my experience the M6 is best suited for herniated discs, regular lordosis, or normal anatomical physiologies. Precise diagnostics with the most careful attention to detail lead us to your perfect solution.“
Implant Type: Synergy Cervical
ONZ Neurosurgeon Dr. Bernd Illerhaus about the Synergy implant, “The Synergy Disc is our viable alternative to fusion in patients with pre-operative alignment issues. It is available in many different sizes and configurations. It is our preferred implant type for kyphotic misalignments, restoring sagittal balance and preserving vertebral motion.
Different anatomies require different implant solutions. Principally we target to replace the pathomorphologic disc by an artificial disc that mimics the biostatical features of a natural, healthy disc. In patients with very low discal heights we have to react with the smallest implant types available.”
Implant Type: M6-Lumbar
ONZ Neurosurgeon Dr. Thomas Bierstedt about the M6-L implant, “According to our experience the clinical outcome with the M6 is superior to other implant types of previous implant generations. The M6 is designed to mimic a disc’s natural motion in a superior quality. Its features like restricted flexion and extension plus shock absorption are significantly less stressful for facet joints and adjacent levels. Implant subsidence has dramatically decreased with the M6 compared to previous implant types like semi-constrained or ball-and-socket devices.
Implant Type: Triumph Lumbar Disc
ONZ Neurosurgeon Dr. Bernd Illerhaus about the Triumph implant, “The Triumph artificial disc is a motion preserving posterior alternative for higher lumbar levels. Thus we can provide an excellent alternative to fusion in patients with degenerative disc disease (DDD) at L1-S1 and who are ineligible for an anterior approach due to previous abdominal surgeries, vascular diseases, and higher lumbar levels.”
Implant Type: TOPS™
ONZ Neurosurgeon Dr. Bernd Illerhaus about TOPS™ implants, “Most people suffering from moderate to severe lumbar spinal stenosis (with or without spondylolisthesis) are being treated today with spinal fusion.
The TOPS™System is an alternative to fusion surgery for patients suffering from moderate to severe lumbar spinal stenosis and/or spondylolisthesis. The TOPS™ System is a mechanical device implanted by a posterior surgical approach which allows axial rotation, lateral bending, extension, and flexion.”
“A fusion is an irreversible interference of the biomechanics of the spine. Who would accept a fusion of the knee or hip joint in the case of osteoarthritis?”

Dr. Thomas Bierstedt is a specialist in neurosurgery and an expert for the conservative and surgical treatment of degenerative and traumatic spinal disorders.
Dr. Bierstedt conducts 350–400 spinal surgeries of all degrees of difficulty. Approximately, 50 % of these surgeries motion-preserving interventions i.e. artificial disc replacement.
He is also an adviser in the development of different implants and instruments for the medical technology companies LDR, Premia Spine and Signus.
Additionally, Dr. Bierstedt educates and trains new surgeons for various surgical procedures.
